Technology Adoption Programme enables productivity growth for SMEs
With A*STAR's Technology Adoption Programme (TAP), SMEs can now tap the right technology that can enhance productivity, increase efficiency, provide a competitive edge for their business.
The drive for improved growth and productivity amidst a highly competitive global market has meant that innovation and technology is an important and key differentiator for an SME. As a result, technology that is targeted and customised to business needs as well as readily accessible is valuable for any enterprise looking for business growth.
Information on the latest industry technologies is widely available in our knowledge economy. However, the demands of running an SME leaves executives time poor. With time and resources in short supply, a business may be unable to quickly and efficiently identify relevant technologies, let alone apply them. This is where Technology Adoption Programme (TAP) comes in.
How it Works
TAP was launched in July 2013 by A*STAR. It departs from other initiatives in providing for technology intermediaries; for example, individuals who can bridge the gap between companies, and public and private technology solution providers.
- Identifying productivity opportunities for an SME.
- Advising on relevant technology and matching the SME with available technology solutions.
- Identifying a technology developer if a solution is not readily available.
- Working with the SME on technology implementation and scale-up.
Through its programme, TAP aims to solve productivity bottlenecks and increase operational efficiency, and work accuracy. It aims to positively impact a business's bottom line. TAP is currently targeted to the marine, aerospace, precision engineering, food manufacturing, construction, retail sectors and infocomm-media, with more sectors to follow.
Where solutions are not available or suitable for companies, A*STAR's technology intermediaries will identify suitable technology developers and help deploy the solution with the company.
How companies benefit
TAP provides neutral and unbiased advice that ensures an SME is matched with the correct technology intermediary. The intermediary's role does not stop with technology identification but continues on to the pilot technology stage and the productivity outcomes stage. Training is also provided as required. TAP aims to keep its processes streamlined and its services are provided free of cost. For any intellectual property (IP) generated through the TAP program, business-friendly licensing opportunities exist.
Nine months on from its start, TAP has reached out to 2,300 SMEs. Close to 200 companies from the present industry sectors have adopted technologies in areas such as visual imaging, radio frequency identification (RFID) and the Internet of Things.
