Set yourself apart from rival SMEs by building up high-quality links that will help elevate your business website’s ranking on major search engines, such as Google and Bing. This is one of the most important strategies of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO).

Link building is about increasing the number and quality of inbound links to your website. The more hyperlinks you acquire from other websites, the more important search engines consider your site to be. Ensure that these links are from relevant sites with authority though.

Two benefits of links building
a.   More eyes viewing your site as visitors click through from other sites;
b.   Search engines considering your site more credible and raising its ranking.

When ranking a web page for relevant keywords, search engines look at page content, the number of links from external websites to this page, and the quality of those external websites.

Sharing links with other websites means building relationships with those particular organisations that will benefit your business, either by association or by actually working together.

Hooking them in

To attract the best links, you have to hook them in with something that makes them not just want to look at your site, but link up with it. Search online and social media sites such as Twitter for relevant companies to help you make a list of those you wish would link with you.

Look out too for other sites to which your target websites are already linked. Popular industry-related blogs might also be worth a look for link building.

Creating particular content is a good way of attracting your target audience to link with your site. This could be articles, videos, infographics, or even a how-to guide. Next, contact those target link sites. The better your content, the higher your chance of quality links.

Give a little, get a little

You could also try specifically mentioning your target link sites. For example, feature a top 10 list of sites/blogs or articles about personalities associated with the companies you are targeting. Once you have specific content related to them, it’s easier to request a link.

Or, approach industry-relevant websites with ‘broken’ links or outdated information and let them know that linking to your site will give them more up-to-date content.

Guest blogging is another option. Ask industry-relevant blogs if they would like to publish some content from your company. Make sure both your contribution and your targeted blog have high standards.

In summary, link building helps raise your website’s search engine ranking. However, it is just one of many components that contribute to your site’s SEO.
